Princeton Confers 1,773 Degrees at 249th Commencement
Princeton University conferred a total of 1,773 bachelor and advanced degrees this morning at its 249th Commencement. There were 589 men and 514 women in the graduating senior class. The total of 1,107 recipients of bachelors degrees included four additional undergraduates from earlier classes who were also awarded a June degree. The undergraduate degrees included 952 bachelors of arts and 151 bachelors of science in engineering.

Presidential Appearances, Honorary Degrees at Princeton
Today, President Bill Clinton becomes the first sitting U.S. president to receive an honorary degree at Princeton University's commencement. President Clinton is the 18th American president to receive an honorary degree from Princeton, and he is one of at least 10 U.S. presidents to receive the degree in person.

From Governor Belcher to President Clinton: Honorary Degrees at Princeton
Princeton University has awarded honorary degrees since its earliest days. In 1748, at the first commencement, a Master of Arts was awarded to Governor Jonathan Belcher of the Province of New Jersey. Belcher, a Harvard graduate, had granted the young college its second charter and was recognized as a "founder, patron, and benefactor."
