Consul-General of Israel Speaks on Peace in the Middle East

Princeton, N.J.--Colette Avital, Consul-General of Israel, will speak on "Making Peace in the Middle East" at Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs on Thursday, April 18, at 4:30 p.m. in Dodds Auditorium, Robertson Hall.

Israel's highest-ranking woman diplomat, Avital has held a variety of key posts in Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including deputy director of information, director of the training division, and deputy director-general in charge of information and media communications. In 1986 she was appointed to lead the ministry's efforts to upgrade the status of women in diplomatic service. Avitalls distinguished record of foreign postings includes Brussels, Paris, Montreal, Boston, and her appointment in 1988 as Israel's ambassador to Portugal.

Avital was born in Bucharest, Romania, but immigrated to Israel as a child. An expert in media relations and cultural affairs, she joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs after her service in the army and while she was completing a B.A. at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Her diplomatic work abroad has provided her with the opportunity to complete two master's degrees -- an M.A. from the University of Montreal and an M.P.A. from Harvard University.

Her lecture is sponsored by the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs and the Center for Jewish Life.
