Princeton Confers 1,773 Degrees
at 249th Commencement
Princeton University conferred a total of 1,773 bachelor and advanced degrees this morning at its 249th Commencement.
There were 589 men and 514 women in the graduating senior class. The total of 1,107 recipients of bachelors degrees included four additional undergraduates from earlier classes who were also awarded a June degree. The undergraduate degrees included 952 bachelors of arts and 151 bachelors of science in engineering.
Of those seniors awarded degrees, 511--or 46.3 percent--received some form of honors: 91 highest honors, 165 high honors, and 255 honors; 48.1 percent of women received honors and 44.8 percent of men.
The 666 advanced degrees included 287 doctors of philosophy, 261 masters of arts, 66 masters in public affairs, 23 masters of architecture, two masters of science, 20 masters of science in engineering, and seven masters of fine arts.
U.S. President William J. Clinton delivered the principal address at the commencement ceremonies.
In keeping with long tradition, two commencement speeches, the valedictory and Latin salutatory addresses, were delivered by members of the graduating class. The valedictorian, Bryan Duff of Gainesville, Fla., is a psychology major. The salutatorian is Charles P. Stowell, a classics major, from Havre de Grace, Md.
