Marian Wright Edelman to Appear at Reading, Book Signing


Princeton, N.J. -- Marian Wright Edelman, founder and president of the Children's Defense Fund, will appear on campus April 30 at 7:30 p.m. to read selections from her two best-sellers, Guide My Feet and The Measure of Our Success. The reading, to be held at McCosh 50, is free an open to the public.

The event is sponsored by the University's Program in African-American Studies and by the Arts Council of Princeton. Vivian Shapiro is the honorary chair of the event; co-chairs are Elyse Newhouse and Susan Wilson, both of the Arts Council; Arnold Rampersad, professor of English and director of the African-American Studies Program; and Howard F. Taylor, professor of sociology and acting director of the African-American Studies Program.

Edelman received an honorary degree from Princeton University in 1993 in recognition of her work as an advocate for children. A graduate of Spelman College and Yale Law School, she has won numerous awards for her work, including a MacArthur Prize Fellowship and the Albert Schweitzer Humanitarian Award.

Edelman will sign books before and after the event. Books will be available for purchase at McCosh 50, and a limited number of signed books will be available after the event at the Art Council of Princeton, 102 Witherspoon St.

After the reading and book-signing, Edelman will appear at a reception will be held at Prospect House, on the Princeton University campus, to benefit the Arts Councills Howard Waxwood Scholarship Fund for Neighborhood Children.
