Master of Butler College

Sanjeev Kulkarni |

Sanjeev Kulkarni, associate professor of electrical engineering, has been named master of Butler College, effective July 1, succeeding Lee Mitchell.
Kulkarni, a Princeton faculty member since 1991, currently serves as associate dean for academic affairs in the School of Engineering and Applied Science, where he has been a longtime freshman adviser. He also is an affiliated faculty member of the Department of Operations Research and Financial Engineering and the Department of Philosophy.
Kulkarni has taught a broad range of courses in electrical engineering, computer science, philosophy, and operations research and financial engineering. He has won five Excellence in Teaching Awards from the Undergraduate Engineering Council.
Kulkarni's research interests include statistical pattern recognition, nonparametric estimation, learning and adaptive systems, information theory, wireless networks, signal/image/video processing, and econometrics and finance. He is a faculty fellow at Forbes College, a member of the Committee on Discipline and a former member of the Undergraduate Life Committee.
The appointment was announced by Nancy Malkiel, dean of the college, and Kathleen Deignan, dean of undergraduate students. A faculty member serves as the head of each of Princeton's five residential colleges. The masters work closely with their staffs to build supportive communities and to devise programs and activities to extend education beyond the classroom.

Michele Minter |
Michele Minter, who has played key leadership roles in the University's fund-raising efforts for nine years, has been named director of development, effective July 1.
In her new role, Minter will oversee the offices directly responsible for raising funds from Princeton alumni, parents and friends: annual giving, principal gifts, leadership gifts, planned giving, and corporate and foundation relations.
Minter has served since July 2003 as director of leadership gifts, managing a staff that raises funds for the University's highest endowment and capital needs. She will continue to hold that position while a search is conducted for her successor.
"Michele has provided outstanding leadership and demonstrated exceptional management and administrative abilities. She also has been an important contributor to our ongoing strategic planning process," said Brian McDonald, vice president for development. "She is highly re-garded by the University's senior admin-istrative team and by key alumni and campus volunteers with whom she has worked."
Minter joined the Princeton staff in 1995 as associate director of leadership gifts. She was promoted to senior associate director in 2000 and acting director in 2002. She also developed and managed Princeton's Women In Leadership Initiative, an effort launched in 1998 to encourage alumnae to participate as philanthropists and volunteers.
Before coming to Princeton, Minter was director of concerts and special events at Westminster Choir College, an on-site evaluator for the National Endowment for the Arts and an agent and publicity representative at Columbia Artists Management.
A magna cum laude Yale graduate, Minter earned an MFA in performing arts management from the City University of New York, where she was the Wilson Lehr Award recipient. She volunteers as a trustee of the Princeton Area Community Foundation and a member of the executive committee for the Fund for Women and Girls, the board of Women in Development of Mercer County and the Princeton committee of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.
Facilities reorganization
The facilities department recently has undergone a reorganization in order to respond to new demands for managing an increasingly growing and complex set of capital projects.
Anne St. Mauro, a member of the facilities staff since 2000, has been named director of the Office of Design and Construction. She takes on some of the duties previously under the supervision of Jon Hlafter, the former director of the Office of Physical Planning who has been named University architect.

Hlafter, who joined the Princeton staff in 1968, will continue to be responsible for selecting the architects and managing the design for construction projects. St. Mauro, who has served as associate director for construction management in the Office of Physical Planning, will coordinate the budgeting, scheduling and quality control aspects of the projects.
"With nearly a billion dollars of capital projects scheduled for the next six years, we knew we needed to reorganize to better deal with the challenges ahead," said Michael McKay, vice president for facilities. "This re-alignment of responsibilities allows our staff to focus their energy and talents where they can be most effective."
Since joining Princeton, St. Mauro has provided leadership to the project teams managing the University's capital building program during the construction and occupancy phases. She also has participated in the plan-ning and design phases from the aspect of ensuring that construction phase needs will be met.
Previously, St. Mauro served as director of project management at Columbia University and director of construction management at Rutgers University. She also has worked in construction management for consulting firms and for New York state government offices. A licensed professional engineer in New Jersey, she holds bachelor's and master's degrees from Rutgers University.
Hlafter, who earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Princeton, was named the University's director of physical planning in 1969. Over the years, he has been responsible for the management of hundreds of construction projects at Princeton, including award-winning work by notable architects such as Robert Venturi, Rafael Viñoly and I.M. Pei.
He recently was honored for his significant contributions to the profession by selection to the American Institute of Architects College of Fellows (see story in this issue).
