Princeton to Establish Program in Law and Public Affairs
A new Program in Law and Public Affairs at Princeton University will address ways in which various legal systems, legal practices, and laws can contribute to justice and order in societies and to the well-being of individuals.
A collaboration of the University's Department of Politics, Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, and University Center for Human Values, the program will seek to create an intellectual forum for discussion of ways in which legal systems and practices can and should be shaped by changing human and social circumstances, as well as by new knowledge of the world around us. The program will sponsor research as well as conferences and lectures by Princeton faculty and distinguished visitors.9/29/97

Charles C. Gillispie, Dayton Stockton Professor of History, emeritus, and professor of the history of science, emeritus, has been awarded the 1997 Balzan Prize in the History and Philosophy of Science. The International Balzan Foundation, based in Switzerland, cited Gillispie for "the extraordinary contribution he has made to the history and philosophy of science by his intellectually vigorous and exacting works."9/15/97

Campus Panel Discussion to Feature Robinson's Daughter
In 1951, four years after he broke Major League Baseball's color barrier, Jackie Robinson put his family on a rickety "colored" bus and headed for a second-rate, all-black hotel in Miami. The Brooklyn Dodgers were under new management, and moving the team headquarters to a posh hotel apparently mattered more than finding a place that would welcome the National League's Most Valuable Player of 1949, his black teammates, and their wives. Other Dodgers did not protest, and Robinson remained quiet. In Miami and across the South, Jim Crow was part of the landscape, as American as baseball itself.9/11/97

Mudd Library Completes Catalog, Preservation of Adlai E. Stevenson Papers
A recently completed preservation and cataloging project will give researchers improved access to the documentary legacy of Adlai E. Stevenson, a member of the Princeton Class of 1922 who served as governor of Illinois and U.N. ambassador and twice ran unsuccessfully for President of the United States. Stevenson gave portions of his papers to Princeton in 1963 and 1964, and most of his remaining papers were given to the University in 1969...8/8/97
