Visiting Professor to Inaugurate Math
Call-In Show at Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Frank Morgan, a visiting professor of mathematics at Princeton University, will host a live math call-in show that will broadcast weekly on cable television on campus and in Princeton Borough, beginning September 15.

Math Chat will air live from Forbes College each Monday from 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Campus viewers may tune to channel 7 (in offices, common spaces, and dormitory rooms with Tier 1 video service) or channel 2 (in dormitory rooms with Tier 2 video service). Viewers in Princeton Borough may tune to the University's local-access channel, A11 on CTEC. Callers may reach the host on telephone lines (609) 258-1291 and -1292 during the program.

Morgan developed Math Chat at Williams College, where he has been professor of mathematics for 10 years. The call-in show features questions, answers, and prizes on popular topics raised by callers of all ages and interests. Morgan thinks that math should be fun for everyone.

Morgan describes his teaching approach as using the simplest examples to expose the principles involved in understanding complex phenomena. His textbook Calculus Lite (1995) is used in Princeton's introductory courses.

Professor Simon Kochen, who serves as undergraduate representative for Princeton's Department of Mathematics, will be Morgan's guest for the season premier on September 15.

Morgan is one of the first incumbents of a new visiting professorship for distinguished teaching established by University President Harold T. Shapiro in honor of Princeton's 250th Anniversary. Visitors are selected for their demonstrated excellence in teaching and their capacity to bring new ideas in undergraduate teaching to the campus.
