Research Team Advances Display Technology for Television and Computer
A June 27 Science article reports that a team of five scientists at Princeton University and the University of Southern California (USC) has developed an independently controlled, three-color organic light-emitting device. This advance adds finely tuned color to a technology developed by the same team last year, which is expected to permit such applications as high-definition televisions with flat displays that hang on a wall like a painting and laptop computers with bright displays that consume considerably less energy.6/27/97
Princeton to Host 40 South Bronx Students at Summer Institute
Forty fourth-grade students from the South Bronx will spend four weeks on the Princeton campus starting July 6 in an intensive academic enrichment program that is part of an ongoing effort to strengthen reading and math skills and encourage urban children to aspire to attend college.6/26/97
Professor Robert J. Goldston to Lead Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory

Princeton University Confers 1,694 Degrees at 250th Commencement
Princeton University conferred a total of 1,694 bachelor and advanced degrees this morning at its 250th Commencement. There were 601 men and 485 women in the graduating senior class -- a total of 1,086 recipients of bachelors degrees. The undergraduate degrees included 910 bachelors of arts and 176 bachelors of science in engineering. [Two additional undergraduates from earlier classes were also awarded a June degree.]6/3/97

Princeton University honored four of its faculty for their accomplishments as teachers at this morning's 250th Commencement exercises. Princeton University Honors Four N.J. Secondary School Teachers
Princeton University honored four outstanding secondary school teachers from New Jersey at its 250th commencement ceremonies this morning. Each teacher received an award of $5,000, and each of their schools received $2,500 for library books. This year's award winners were Vickie Bejda of Ocean Township High School in Oakhurst, Dale Lally of Dickinson High School in Jersey City, John O'Hara of Kearny High School in Kearny, and Katherine Widmer of Hopewell Valley Central High School in Pennington.6/2/97

University, Eating Club Reach Agreement on Property
Princeton University and Dial, Elm and Cannon Club have reached an agreement under which the University will acquire the parking lot behind Dial Lodge and, within a year, the Club will decide whether it wishes to transfer the remainder of the Dial property and the Elm property to the University in exchange for Notestein Hall (the former Cannon Club) and an additional cash payment.5/22/97
$10 million Gift from Lowenstein Foundation to Establish New Bendheim Center for Finance
A $10 million gift from the Leon Lowenstein Foundation will establish the Bendheim Center for Finance at Princeton University. The gift honors the foundation's president, Robert A. Bendheim Class of 1937. The new Center will bring together outstanding scholars in the field of financial economics and establish Princeton as a national resource for innovative research on finance and economic public policy.5/20/97

Princeton Students Design a Better Hair Dryer
An innovative hair dryer design won five of Princeton's nascent engineers a trip to Bangkok, Thailand, in March. After competing against six other teams of students in a course called Engineering Design, winners Lina Jin '97, Andy Johnson '98, Matt Nuffort '98, Meeko Oishi '98 and Eric Young '98 were invited by the electronics firm Manica Corp. to present their design to company executives at headquarters in Bangkok.4/25/97

Professor of Astronomy Lyman Spitzer Jr. Dies
Leading Theoretical Astrophysicist and founder of the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, he conceived a large-scale observatory that became the Hubble Space Telescope. Lyman Spitzer Jr., widely known for his contributions to the fields of theoretical astrophysics and plasma physics, died suddenly Monday evening at his home. He was 82.
