Memorandum to Press:
Princeton University's Baccalaureate
and 250th Commencement
June 1 and 3

U.S. Senator William Frist, Princeton Class of 1974, will speak at the University's Baccalaureate, the interfaith worship service, held in the University Chapel, which officially ends the school year at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 1. The Baccalaureate ceremony will be broadcast to seating in front of the Chapel where press are invited to sit. [Please bring a copy of this advisory to gain access to press seating.] Photo opportunities are limited to the academic processional and recessional outside.

Media representatives planning coverage of Princeton University's 250th commencement exercises to be held in front of Nassau Hall at 11:00 on Tuesday morning, June 3, are asked to obtain credentials from the Office of Communications in Stanhope Hall (adjacent to Nassau Hall) by 10:00 a.m.

In the event of heavy rain, commencement exercises will be held in Jadwin Gymnasium. The decision to move to Jadwin would be broadcast on radio stations WHWH (1350 AM) and WPRB (103 F?4) by 9:30 a.m. If commencement exercises are moved to Jadwin, members of the press should check with Justin Harmon there in the Athletic Communications Office, Room 9 on the balcony.

Since Princeton's honorary degrees, in accordance with University tradition, may not be awarded in absentia, the names of the recipients are kept confidential until the morning of commencement. The names and citations of the honorary degree recipients will be in the press kit. Those who wish to photograph the honorary degree recipients in a group with Princeton President Harold T. Shapiro are requested to arrive at Stanhope Hall (or in event of rain, at Jadwin) no later than 10:00 a.m. on commencement day.

The Princeton Prizes for Distinguished Secondary School Teaching in the State of New Jersey (consisting of $5,000 to each teacher, with additional grants of$2,500 to the teachers' schools) will also be presented at the commencement ceremony. All N.J. secondary school teachers are eligible for these awards, which have been made possible since 1959 by an anonymous Princeton alumnus. This year's winners are:

- Katharine Widmer, Hopewell Valley High School, Hopewell
- Vickie Bejda, ocean Township High School, Oakhurst
- Dale Lally, Dickinson High School, Jersey City
- John 0 1 Hara, Kearny High School, Kearny
