Subscriptions. The Bulletin is distributed free to faculty, staff and students. Others may subscribe to the Bulletin for $30 for the academic year (half price for current Princeton parents and people over 65). Princeton NJ -- John Kolligian, director of Georgetown University’s counseling and psychiatric service, has been named director of the counseling and psychological services unit of University Health Services.

Kolligian, whose appointment was effective Sept. 27, has directed the clinical and administrative operations at Georgetown’s counseling service since 2003. Prior to that, he spent nine years as a senior psychologist and coordinator of psychology training at Columbia University. His clinical interests include adolescent self-esteem and identity development, psychological trauma, and stress and coping among highly successful individuals.

“I’m excited about becoming an active participant in a university culture that is firmly committed to advancing the health, mental health and wellness of its community,” Kolligian said. “For me, there’s nothing more meaningful than playing a facilitating role in our students’ psychological development, health and well-being — whether it be removing impediments to learning or expediting emotional growth. At Princeton, we have all the ingredients to raise the bar for how a campus community-based health care model can work and flourish.”

Kolligian added that he will “seek to help foster interdisciplinary connections within University Health Services and enrich linkages across campus through partnering with other health care professionals, deans, faculty, administrators and student groups.”

Daniel Silverman, Princeton’s chief medical officer, said University Health Services is committed to offering a broad range of counseling and psychological services, including crisis intervention, individual and group therapies, psychiatric evaluation, and treatments for eating disorders and alcohol and drug abuse.

“We strongly believe the future lies in evolving our counseling service into a mental health unit, skilled and staffed to triage, diagnose, treat and support students with significant psychiatric conditions as well as age-appropriate developmental concerns,” Silverman said. “John passionately believes in this paradigm as providing the best standard of care, and we are confident with his superb background and experience he can make the vision a reality.”

Kolligian also has served as program director and assistant professor of psychiatry at Yale University, where he received his Ph.D. in clinical and developmental psychology, and maintained a private psychotherapy practice in New York and Washington, D.C. He holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Stanford University, a master’s degree in education and child study from Tufts University and a master of business administration degree from Columbia.

Kolligian succeeds Marvin Geller, who retired in 2003 after 35 years as director of Princeton’s counseling services.
