Adam Smith previews China special

George Goodman, also known as Adam Smith of "Adam Smith's Money World," will present a program called "Crossroads China 2001" at 4:30 pm on January 6 in Dodds Auditorium, Robertson Hall. It will feature previews of a one-hour "Adam Smith" special that will air the following evening on WNET, Channel 13, plus discussion with Robert Hormats, vice chair of Goldman, Sachs International, and Minxin Pei, senior associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
In the special, Goodman discusses the impending conflict between the top-down control of the communist apparatus in China and the rapid modernization of the country via the Internet. To keep its economy growing, he says, China needs world trade, technology, and the rule of law for investorsall of which challenge traditional communist authority. He talks with Henry Kissinger, Yale professor Jonathan Spence, former ambassadors Winston Lord and James Sasser, and Yahoo founder Jerry Yang, as well as Chinese artists, chefs, economists and bureaucrats.
Goodman helped found New York magazine and was a founding editor of the trade magazine Institutional Investor. His books include The Money Game, Supermoney, and Powers of Mind.
Hormats has served as assistant secretary of state for economic and business affairs, ambassador and deputy US trade representative, and senior economic adviser to Kissinger, Brent Scowcroft and Zbigniew Brzezinski. His publications include American Albatross: The Foreign Debt Dilemma and Reforming the International Monetary System.
Pei's work has covered a wide range of subjects, including US relations with East Asian countries and democratization in developing countries. A former faculty member in the Politics Department, he is the author of From Reform to Revolution: The Demise of Communism in China and the Soviet Union and a forthcoming book on "The Political Economy of Legal Reform in China."
