- Subscriptions. The Bulletin is distributed free to faculty, staff and students. United Way campaign kicks off Nov. 9
Princeton NJ — This fall, Princeton will once again support the United Way of Greater Mercer County’s annual fund-raising campaign. The University’s drive will take place from Nov. 9 through Dec. 9 on the main campus and on Tuesday, Nov. 14, at the Princeton Plasma Physics Lab.
Last year faculty and staff contributed $207,296, exceeding any previous year’s contributions. Over the past year, the United Way provided much needed relief to people in the local community. The number of those in need was unprecedented, and the local United Way chapter was able to respond to individuals, families and organizations affected by the impact of such factors as severe weather conditions.
The theme for the 2006 United Way Campaign is “What Matters.” United Way funding is based on four focus areas: caring for seniors and people with disabilities; accessing health care; helping children succeed; and fostering self-sufficiency.
All donations will be distributed to United Way programs in Mercer County or employees’ home communities, or to other health and human services agencies that are designated by individual donors. This year’s campus campaign is co-chaired by David Dobkin, dean of the faculty, and Lianne Sullivan-Crowley, vice president for human resources. Pamela Johnson, events coordinator for human resources, is the campaign coordinator.
“It’s so exciting to see the University come together for such a great cause,” said Johnson. “Being able to discover the opportunities that will touch the hearts of others is a rewarding feeling, and our volunteers are to be commended for their team spirit and dedication in supporting the United Way and providing solutions for the most pressing needs of our community. The funds raised by our employees through the United Way have helped numerous individuals and families and served to strengthen many communities in our area.”
“The United Way Campaign provides employees with many charitable organizations to which they can contribute,” added Sullivan-Crowley. “The generosity of Princeton’s staff and faculty demonstrates the strong ties we have to our local communities and exemplifies our commitment to service, particularly for those in need.”
The University will contribute 15 cents per dollar for all gifts made by payroll deduction. For all other types of donations, the University will contribute 10 cents per dollar.
Donors can choose to make general or specific contributions. They can provide contributions that are divided among all United Way-supported programs, among all programs in an area of interest or among all except for a particular program. With a minimum gift of $52, they can designate a contribution to a United Way in their home community, to any specific program supported by the United Way or to any charitable health or human care organization with a 501(c)(3) tax status that is not supported by the United Way. While the historic focus of United Way is on home communities, it also is possible to direct gifts to agencies that provide health or human care in other countries.
As an incentive to giving, the first 200 people who make a United Way donation will receive two free tickets to the Princeton-Dartmouth football game at Princeton Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 18.
As they have in the past, United Way campaign volunteers will distribute pledge cards within their departments.
