Series explores presidential leadership in times of crisis
Princeton NJ — A lecture series on “Presidential Leadership in Times of Crisis” will include four talks between Oct. 3 and Nov. 20 examining how Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Roosevelt, Lyndon Johnson and Abraham Lincoln faced the country’s challenges.
“The planned lectures should be fascinating in themselves and provide perspective on the dilemmas faced by President Bush,” said Princeton presidential scholar Fred Greenstein, director of the Program in Leadership Studies in the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, which is sponsoring the lecture series with the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions.
The series includes these lectures:
• John Cooper Jr., the Fox Professor of American Institutions at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will discuss “Woodrow Wilson as President: The Irony of Fate” at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, in 104 Computer Science Building. Cooper’s books include “Breaking the Heart of the World: Woodrow Wilson and the Fight for the League of Nations,” “The Wilson Era” and “The Warrior and the Priest: Woodrow Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt.”
• Alonzo Hamby, Distinguished Professor of History Emeritus at Ohio University, will speak on “Franklin D. Roosevelt: Lion, Fox or Muddler?” at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, in Dodds Auditorium, Robertson Hall. Hamby is the author of “For the Survival of Democracy: Franklin D. Roosevelt and the World Crisis of the 1930s” and “Liberalism and Its Challengers: FDR to Bush.”
• George Herring, Alumni Professor of History Emeritus at the University of Kentucky, will deliver a talk titled “Lyndon Johnson as Commander in Chief” at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, in Dodds Auditorium. Herring’s books include “LBJ and Vietnam: A Different Kind of War,” “The Secret Diplomacy of the Vietnam War” and “America’s Longest War: The United States and Vietnam, 1950-1975.”
• James McPherson, Princeton’s George Henry Davis ’86 Professor of History Emeritus, will speak on “Abraham Lincoln’s Invention of Presidential War Powers” at 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 20, in Dodds Auditorium. McPherson’s works include the Pulitzer Prize-winning “Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era” as well as “Abraham Lincoln and the Second American Revolution” and “Drawn With the Sword: Reflections on the American Civil War.”
