Communications, development offices win national awards

Princeton NJ — Staff members in the Office of Communications have been honored for publications projects in two national competitions held this year by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) and the University and College Designers Association (UCDA).

In addition, staff members in the Office of Development won a CASE award for a Flash e-mail presentation. The awards recognize projects produced in 2005.

The communications office received a bronze medal from CASE in the category Individual Student Recruitment Publications for the 26-page booklet, “Engaging at Princeton.” It was one of seven bronze medals awarded from a total of 208 entries.

“Engaging at Princeton” was created for the Pace Center to help inform incoming and current undergraduates of the myriad opportunities for community service and leadership at the University. Princeton staff members credited in the publication are the communications office’s Karin Dienst for writing and Micole Sharlin for design, as well as the Pace Center’s Elsie Sheidler for editing. Communications intern Shani Hilton provided design assistance. A version of the updated 2006 publication is available online at www.princeton.edu/pr/ pub/engaging/06.

Two publications produced annually for the Admission Office as key components of its recruitment efforts — the viewbook and the abridged viewbook “In Brief” — received two of three Excellence Awards from UCDA in a new category, Going Green. In its award announcement, UCDA stated that this category recognizes entrants “who take initiative in the creation of communications that reduce environmental impact and/or make strong statements of leadership in this area.”

The 64-page viewbook, which has a print run of 135,000, and the 32-page “In Brief,” which has a print run of 150,000, are printed on chlorine-free, 30 percent post-consumer recycled paper manufactured at wind-powered facilities in New York.

Princeton staff members credited in the viewbook and “In Brief” are: Karin Dienst, Office of Communications, and Keith Light, Admission Office, for editing; Micole Sharlin, Maggie Westergaard and Kirk Webber, Office of Communications, for design; and Denise Applewhite and John Jameson, Office of Communications, with others, for photography. A downloadable version (PDF) of the current 2006 viewbook is available online at www.princeton.edu/pr/ admissions/u/ai/; and “In Brief” can be viewed (and downloaded) at www.princeton.edu/pr/ admissions/u/brief.

Staff members in the development office won a silver medal in CASE’s Interactive Multimedia Programs category. There were 38 entries, with one gold and two silver medals awarded.

The e-mail presentation, titled “Friendship’s Lasting Truth,” was sent to donors and prospective donors as part of the annual giving campaign. It contained photos of friendships between and among Princetonians, set to a traditional song. Sent during the holiday season, it was intended to thank alumni for their generosity and remind them that Princeton depends on their support.

The project manager was Mia N. Miller, annual giving’s associate director for communications; J.T. Miller, senior associate director of strategic partnerships and planning, took many of the photos and chose others from archives.

CASE is a not-for-profit group representing professionals who work in alumni relations, communications and development at more than 3,000 colleges, universities and independent schools in the United States and other countries.
