Fifth Anniversary Fristfest Weekend to include food, music, films and fun

Princeton NJ — Faculty, staff, students and University family members are invited to celebrate spring and the conclusion of the academic year at the Frist Campus Center’s Fifth Anniversary Fristfest Weekend Thursday through Saturday, May 4-6. This year’s celebration also marks the culmination of the Frist Campus Center’s yearlong fifth anniversary observance.

The Fristfest outdoor celebration on Thursday will honor the enduring spirit and resiliency of the people of the Gulf Coast and recognize the continued commitment to the region’s revitalization. The Frist Campus Center and the Pace Center will help various campus organizations that have ongoing ties to the region to highlight opportunities for continued involvement in hurricane relief efforts. Information and fund-raising opportunities will be available throughout the festival.

Partnerships and relief efforts include:

• The Katrina Project will set up laptops to provide the opportunity for the campus community to make donations directly to the “Levee for Life” benefiting the New Orleans Public Library.

• An exhibit on the life and culture of New Orleans created by Lauren Bartholomew, a member of the Katrina Project and a freshman from New Orleans, will be on display on the Frist 100 level.

• Princeton Water Watch will take direct and electronic donations to the Sierra Club’s Coastline Restoration for efforts to prevent flooding and other environmental catastrophes and to promote community sustainability.

• Members of the Student Volunteers Council will display photos of cleanup efforts from their three break trips to the Gulf Coast and talk about opportunities to participate in the organization.

• The Center Stage Program Board staff will distribute a fact sheet with updates on the status of recovery efforts throughout the day.

Festivities on Thursday will kick off at 4 p.m. with an outdoor picnic and carnival featuring live entertainment, games and giveaways on the south lawn of the Frist Campus Center. The entertainment will include: Louisiana-based Geno Delafose and the French Rockin’ Boogie; ensembles of the University jazz program under the direction of Anthony Branker and special guest Wilson “Willie Tee” Turbinton, a lifelong New Orleans resident and a guest lecturer in the music department; the Sensemaya Afrobeat All-Stars; and seniors Trene Anderson and Darnell Motley and junior Casey Lockwood.

A New Orleans-themed menu will include muffaletta and Cajun rib-eye sandwiches, jambalaya, and seafood gumbo and rice. Students with an active meal plan contract can swipe their Princeton ID to receive tickets for the picnic. Non-meal plan holders can purchase $2 tickets for the dinner. Tickets will be on sale at the Food Gallery at the Frist Campus Center on Thursday. Free beignets and beverages will be available throughout the afternoon.

The celebration will continue on Friday with a Moonlight Movie double feature presentation of “Rent” (rated PG-13) and “The Wedding Crashers” (rated R) starting at 8 p.m. on the Frist south lawn. Free popcorn, ice cream and cotton candy will be available.

The weekend will conclude on Saturday with the Last Laugh Comedy Night, featuring comedian Dominic Dierkes at 9 p.m. in the Frist Food Gallery on the A Level. A year-end send-off party featuring live musical entertainment will follow immediately after the comedy night in the Frist Multipurpose Room on the B Level.
