Princeton NJ -- Members of the campus and local communities gathered in Richardson Auditorium Jan. 17 to reflect on the continuing journey of Martin Luther King’s dream during a ceremony commemorating the slain civil rights leader’s birthday.

Yvonne Smith Segars, state of New Jersey public defender, delivered the keynote address, noting that “At the core of the American dream is Dr. King’s dream of equality and justice that has burned like an eternal flame.”

Segars spoke following the presentation of the University’s first MLK Day Journey Awards and of awards to essay, poster and video contest winners from area schools. President Tilghman presented the Journey Awards to junior Dylan Tatz and Vice President Robert Durkee for their efforts to continue the journey to achieve King’s vision for America. The CASYM Steel Orchestra of Brooklyn performed musical selections during the event.
