  Mark Pecaric
 

Name: Mark Pecaric.

Position: Foreman of the main campus grounds. Supervising the care of most of the 10 miles of roadways and 54 miles of sidewalk at the University, which entails coordinating the mowing as well as the sidewalk cleaning and road sweeping performed by two crews of 14 people. Helping out with snow removal, which sometimes requires a 4 a.m. arrival on campus.

Quote: "I enjoy the students and I enjoy the people that I work with. I think we have a very good group of people, not only on the ground crew but in the other shops. Most everyone is very accommodating."

Other interests: Taking cruises to destinations such as Alaska and Tahiti. Raising show rabbits and restoring old cars. Spending time with his adult children, a son and a daughter.


Staff retirements

Effective Aug. 1: at the Blairstown Center, public relations/development staff member John Danielson, after 43 years; in the library, office support staff member Hattie Taylor, after 31 years.


Briefs

Three faculty members in the Department of Mathematics have been honored in recent months.

Weinan E, professor of mathematics and applied and computational mathematics, was awarded the International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics Collatz Prize for 2003. This prize provides international recognition to individual scientists under 42 years of age for outstanding work on industrial and applied mathematics.

Martin Kruskal, professor emeritus of mathematics and astrophysical sciences, was awarded the Maxwell Prize for 2003 by the Institute of Mathematics and Its Applications. The institute is a professional and learned society for qualified and practicing mathematicians.

Elliott Lieb, the Eugene Higgins Professor of Physics and professor of mathematical physics, was awarded the Henri Poincare Prize by the International Association of Mathematical Physics. He was honored "for his lifetime achievements in quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics and analysis."
