Diane Abbott, First Black Woman Elected to British Parliament, to Speak
9/24/99 -- The Princeton University Women's Center, the Third World Center, and the African American Studies Program will host Diane Abbott on Thursday, October 7, 1999 at 7:00 p.m. at the Third World Center Liberation Hall, 86 Olden Avenue, on the Princeton University campus. Ms. Abbott will speak on "Women and Leadership".

Princeton University Library Exhibition Honors George Frideric Handel
9/23/99 -- The world of the great eighteenth-century composer, George Frideric Handel (1685-1759), is captured in a new exhibition at Princeton University's Firestone Library opening October 4 in the Leonard L. Milberg Gallery for the Graphic Arts. The gallery is open to the public without charge from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and from noon to 5 p.m. on weekends.

Princeton Library Exhibition Celebrates Ernest Hemingway Centennial
9/17/99 -- A centennial exhibition on Ernest Hemingway, entitled "'one true sentence': Hemingway and the Art of Fiction," opens October 4th in the Main Exhibition Gallery of Firestone Library at Princeton University. The exhibition focuses on the Nobel Prize-winning author's fiction and his thoughts on the art of writing -- not the hunting, fishing, bullfighting, and war reporting exploits that often claimed the headlines and contributed to making him an icon, unique in American literary history.

MacArthur Foundation President Adele Simmons to Speak at Princeton's Woodrow Wilson School
9/17/99 -- Adele Smith Simmons, outgoing president of the John D. and Catherine T. Trustee Committee Issues Report on Alcohol Initiative
9/15/99 -- In its July 1999 report on the trustee alcohol initiative, the Trustee Committee on Student Life, Health and Athletics summarizes proposals that have already been implemented or will be implemented during the fall of 1999 to address the problem of alcohol abuse on campus. The report emphasizes the importance of measuring patterns of alcohol abuse on a continuing basis, and it establishes a mechanism to allocate funds for efforts that require them.

Kathryn Taylor '74 Named Director of the Alumni Council
9/9/99 -- M. Kathryn Taylor, a 1974 graduate of Princeton University with professional experience in the fields of banking, teaching, choral music, writing and editing, has been named Director of the Alumni Council, effective October 4. She succeeds Daniel N. White '65, who retired this summer after 19 years as director.

Princeton Creates Society of Fellows in the Liberal Arts
9/9/99 -- Princeton University will inaugurate a Princeton Society of Fellows in the Liberal Arts, which will bring outstanding postdoctoral scholars to campus on three-year appointments. The new society, which will ultimately number as many as 24 postdoctoral scholars, is designed to give some of the best young scholars in the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences an opportunity to enhance their teaching and research while bringing to Princeton an infusion of fresh ideas and approaches to education and scholarship.

Montero to Become Vice President for Campus Life, Student Services at Brown
8/27/99 -- Dean of Student Life Janina Montero has accepted an offer to become vice president for campus life and student services at Brown University, effective January 1. At Brown, Montero will have duties similar to those she has fulfilled at Princeton, but in addition she will assume responsibility for Brown's admissions and financial aid processes in July 2000.

Merrill Lynch Makes $600,000 Gift to Economics and Financial Engineering
8/16/99 -- Merrill Lynch & Co., Inc. has made a grant of $600,000 to Princeton University's top-ranked Department of Economics and newly established Department of Operations Research and Financial Engineering. The Merrill Lynch gift will support high-quality academic research in the areas of finance and economics with an emphasis on research relevant to important issues in finance and public policy.

Program to Train "New Breed" of Scientists

Study Shows Energy Research Spending is in Dangerous Decline
7/29/99 -- The United States and many other industrialized nations have dramatically reduced their research into energy technology, jeopardizing the world's ability to cope with environmental problems and the growing demand for energy, according to research done at Princeton.

Six Members Join Princeton Board of Trustees
7/20/99 -- Six new trustees will join the board of Princeton University in September. They are charter trustee Brent Henry; term trustees Heidi Miller and Crystal Nix; and alumni trustees A. Scott Berg, Andrea Jung and Brian Johnson. All will serve until 2003, except for Henry, who will serve until 2009.

Annual Giving Campaign Sets Many Records
7/15/99 -- This year's Annual Giving campaign raised $32,675,084, a record amount. The campaign also achieved a 61 percent rate of participation among all alumni, the highest level in 30 years. The Class of 1974, which had its 25th reunion this year, was designated "Hero of Heroes," raising $5,019,740, the highest amount ever by any Princeton class.
