Montero to Become Vice President for Campus Life, Student Services at Brown

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Dean of Student Life Janina Montero has accepted an offer to become vice president for campus life and student services at Brown University, effective January 1. At Brown, Montero will have duties similar to those she has fulfilled at Princeton, but in addition she will assume responsibility for Brown's admissions and financial aid processes in July 2000.

As Princeton's senior officer of student affairs since 1993, Montero has had responsibility for non-curricular aspects of undergraduate life, including orientation, student organizations and discipline, as well as for Princeton's International, Third World and Women's centers. Montero was the first of Princeton's deans to formally oversee the work of the offices of Athletics, Health Services and Religious Life, and to assume policy responsibility in matters involving undergraduate housing and dining services.

"Dean Montero has worked tirelessly to improve communication among diverse groups on campus, helping knit us together into a stronger community," said Princeton President Harold T. Shapiro. "She has worked to coordinate planning for all aspects of campus life -- including non-curricular programming and student services -- and to make our plans cohere. We will miss her leadership, but we are pleased that she will have this opportunity to extend her professional skills in such important new ways."

Among her contributions to Princeton, Montero has led planning for Princeton's new Frist Campus Center. This comprehensive facility, which will incorporate Palmer Hall, will provide a commons, lounge and social spaces, dining and food services, meeting and assembly rooms, performance and lecture halls, space for student programming, academic and classroom space, and headquarters for a new Center for Teaching and Learning and a Center for Community Service. The Frist Center is expected to be fully operational in September 2000.

Working in close consultation with a trustee subcommittee, Montero has led a broad-based effort to reduce alcohol abuse among Princeton students. This effort has entailed extensive research, communication and planning on the part of many offices, as well as various student and alumni groups. Much of the new programming resulting from this effort will begin on campus this fall.

The position Montero has held at Princeton was newly established in 1993, after a review of administrative structure in the area of student services that was conducted jointly by then-Provost Hugo Sonnenschein and Vice President Thomas H. Wright, and following a search involving a committee of students, faculty and staff. President Shapiro has asked Wright to initiate a similar process to identify Montero's successor by the time she leaves.

In a related action, Kathleen Deignan, who has held the post of associate dean of student life, will assume the title of dean of undergraduate students. This change in title reflects responsibilities Deignan has assumed over the period since the 1993 realignment of duties in the area of student life, and had been planned prior to Montero’s decision. Deignan oversees most aspects of the daily operation of the dean's office and the centers, including the implementation of policy, student discipline, budgeting and staff supervision.
