United Way Campaign
begins November 10
The 1999 Princeton University United Way campaign in
support of the United Way of the Greater Mercer County will
be held from November 10 through December 10 on the main
campus and on November 30 at the Princeton Plasma Physics
Lab. This year's fund drive chairman is Robert Durkee, vice
president for public affairs, and the faculty chair is
physics professor Joseph Taylor, dean of the faculty.
"Last year the University and its faculty and staff
contributed nearly $150,000 to the United Way campaign,"
Durkee said. "This year we hope to do even better. Our gifts
make an important difference to all the programs that serve
the needs of people in our area."

United Way survey results
Last year 279 University faculty and staff
participated in a short online survey about the
United Way. The three things they most cared about
were that:
"the cost of United Way fundraising and
overhead is low"; (173 replies)
"experienced volunteers, knowledgeable
about local needs, decide how the money raised will
be spent";(168) and
"people in the community where I live are
helped by United Way." (154)
United Way's 10 percent expenditure for
fundraising, administration and advertising is well
below the 40 percent cap recommended by the
National Bureau of Charities.

As in the past, the University will contribute 10 cents per
dollar of all gifts by cash or check, and to encourage
employees to take advantage of the payroll deduction method
for supporting United Way, it will contribute 15 cents per
dollar of all gifts made through that payment method. The
first 400 people who make a United Way donation will also
receive two free tickets to the Princeton-Lafayette
basketball game at Jadwin Gym on January 8 and a free lunch
at Chesapeake Bagel Company on Nassau Street.
United Way campaign volunteers will distribute pledge
cards. Anyone with questions can ask their departmental
campaign volunteer, see the United Way web page at www.princeton.edu/pr/uw/
or contact main campus United Way coordinator Karen
Woodbridge (258-5656 or karenw@princeton.edu)
or Plasma Physics United Way campaign chair Mary Ann Brown
(125-3045 or mabrown@pppl.gov).
Volunteers allocate resources
The Resource Investment Volunteers of the United Way of
Greater Mercer County's evaluate needs in the community and
determine which agency programs will receive grants for 2000
through 2003.
They learn about programs and initiatives that help those
most in need to help themselves, evaluate program proposals,
meet with others from the community to help evaluate
programs, and visit programs that request grant funding.
The only background required is an interest in community
service and approximately four to six hours of time per
month.
To join them, call 609-637-4900.
