University and borough team up to address pedestrian safety
Princeton NJ — The University’s Department of Public Safety has teamed up with the Princeton Borough Police Department in an effort to educate the community on issues of pedestrian safety, focusing initially on the stretch of College Road between Alexander Road and Springdale Road.
After talking to borough police and members of the local community, who expressed mutual concerns, the decision was made to install a “speed trailer” to educate drivers.
This area, which sees a lot of pedestrian traffic from the Graduate College, has a posted speed limit of 25 mph. University crime prevention officer James Lanzi, who has been conducting a study of the road over the last several months, said that some vehicles travel at a much higher rate of speed.
After talking to borough police and members of the local community, who expressed mutual concerns, the decision was made to install a “speed trailer” to educate drivers.
Over the next several months, the Princeton Borough police will place the trailer along College Road on random days. The trailer will use radar to check the speed of vehicles and then digitally display it.
“Our intent is to encourage our community members to operate their vehicles safely within the posted speed limit,” said Lanzi, who has been working with Sgt. Robert Currier of the Princeton Borough police on the project. “We need to make people aware that this is a pedestrian area.”
