Princeton soccer celebrates 100 years

Princeton NJ — University teams and fans are celebrating 100 years of soccer at Princeton this fall.
• Princeton’s first men’s soccer game was on Nov. 10, 1906, when the Tigers defeated the Merion Cricket Club of Haverford, Pa., 3-0. The Tigers’ first game against an intercollegiate opponent came the next year, when Princeton faced Columbia and lost 1-3.
• Women’s soccer was introduced as a club sport in 1977 and was elevated to full varsity status for the 1980 season.
• The men’s teams have claimed six Ivy League titles, while the women’s teams have claimed five.
• The men’s and women’s programs have made a combined 15 appearances at the NCAA tournament (eight for the men; seven for the women).
• Princeton is one of five schools in Division I that have reached the NCAA tournament Final Four in both men’s and women’s soccer since 1993. (The others are UCLA, Stanford, SMU and Portland.)
• Some 2,504 fans watched Princeton’s 3-1 win over Washington in the 2004 NCAA quarterfinals at Lourie-Love Field. The victory made Princeton the only Ivy League women’s team ever to advance to the NCAA Final Four.
• Jimmy Reed, who coached the men’s team from 1938 to 1966, has led the Tigers to the most wins of any Princeton soccer mentor with 136; Julie Shackford, the Princeton women’s head coach since 1995, is closing in on that record with 129 wins as of Oct. 7.
• Esmeralda Negron, a 2004 alumna, scored 47 goals during her Princeton career — more than any other male or female player in school history.
