CAP shares academic riches with area residents

Princeton NJ — Area residents can take advantage of the rich academic resources available in their own backyard through the University’s Community Auditing Program (CAP).

The program, offered through Princeton’s Office of Community and State Affairs, allows individuals who register—on a non-credit basis—to attend lectures that are part of the regular course offerings for undergraduate students. Participants each year can choose from among some 200 course offerings, which are listed in a special CAP catalog and are posted online.

In addition, auditors receive course handouts and participate in special receptions and lectures. This semester features a three-lecture program taught by politics professor Paul Sigmund titled “Political Change in Latin America.” Woodrow Wilson School professor Stanley Katz will give a special lecture as part of the CAP end-of-semester reception on Friday, Dec. 16.

Although most classes for the fall semester can accommodate no more auditors, anyone interested in taking a class should contact the CAP office to participate in one of the special lectures or to capture an open slot resulting from a cancellation in one of the regular lectures.

Those interested in auditing should note the following dates regarding the spring 2006 semester:

Last week of December CAP list of lectures available for auditing posted online at web.princeton.edu/sites/pucsa/auditing.htm.

Wednesday, Jan. 11 Registration for Princeton Borough and Township residents and all University-affiliated individuals (alumni, staff, retired staff) from 8 a.m. to noon in Richardson Auditorium, Alexander Hall.

Thursday, Jan. 12 Registration for the general public from 8 a.m. to noon in Richardson Auditorium, Alexander Hall.

Friday, Jan. 13 Registration for the general public from 8 a.m. to noon in the CAP office, 22 Chambers St., Suite 101.

Saturday, Jan. 14, through Friday, Feb. 10 Registration will remain open through the first week of classes for those courses with space available. After the first two days of special registration, it is possible to sign up by going directly to the CAP office at 22 Chambers St., Suite 101, between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Monday, Feb. 6 First day of classes.

The auditing fee per course is $100 to cover administrative costs and course materials. Special accommodations regarding the fee will be made in cases of financial hardship.

Although no certification is given upon completion of a Community Auditing Program course, New Jersey teachers who audit classes will be granted special documentation/verification for the purposes of satisfying their professional development requirements.

The Community Auditing Program should not be confused with the Program in Continuing Education, which entitles an individual to all privileges given to a fully enrolled student at a cost of $3,930 per class. The Office of Community and State Affairs administers both programs for University and non-University constituents.

The Program in Continuing Education is for those individuals pursuing college credits that can be applied to a degree from another institution of higher education. It is not possible to obtain a degree from Princeton on a part-time basis. However, Program in Continuing Education courses can be an invaluable resource for New Jersey teachers who need to enroll in classes for credit. Full-time teachers in New Jersey may participate in the Program in Continuing Education at the substantial discount of $655 per course.

For more information about the Community Auditing Program, visit the Web site at web.princeton.edu/sites/pusca/auditing.htm or call 258-0202; for the Program in Continuing Education, visit the Web site at web.princeton.edu/sites/pucsa/conted or call 258-5226; or visit the office at 22 Chambers St., Suite 101, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
