The Bulletin is published weekly during the academic year, except during University breaks and exam weeks, by the Office of Communications. Second class postage paid at Princeton. Subscriptions. The Bulletin is distributed free to faculty, staff and students. Others may subscribe to the Bulletin for $15 for the spring semester ($7.50 for current Princeton parents and people over 65). Deadlines. In general, the copy deadline for each issue is the Friday 10 days in advance of the Monday cover date. The dead-line for the Bulletin that covers Feb. 28-Mar. 6 is Friday, Feb. 18. A complete publication schedule is available at <deadlines> or by calling (609) 258-3601.

Spotlight

Susan Kovach

Kovach

Name: Susan Kovach.

Position: Events coordinator in the Office of the President. Planning events held at Lowrie House, the president’s residence, including student breakfasts, receptions for new faculty members and trustee dinners. Sending out invitations, working with the chef on menus and attending receptions to make sure everything goes smoothly.

Quote: “During the last six years, I’ve held three jobs at Princeton. I worked in the dean of the faculty’s office and the provost’s office before moving to this position. It’s so valuable to have the opportunity to move around and learn about different aspects of the University — each of my experiences prepared me for the next challenge.”

Other interests: Preparing meals with a gourmet cooking club in Princeton Junction. Traveling with her husband, Bill, and their daughter, Meridith.

Briefs

The National Academy of Sciences has selected Princeton professor of chemistry Robert Cava to receive the 2005 John Carty Award for the Advancement of Science.

The award, which includes a medal and a prize of $25,000, is given annually for distinguished accomplishment in any field of science and was given this year in the area of materials science. The academy cited Cava “for his outstanding contributions in the synthesis and characterization of many new materials that display interesting and important superconducting, dielectric, magnetic or thermal properties.”

The award will be presented at a ceremony May 2 in Washington, D.C., at the annual meeting of the National Academy of Sciences.

Cava came to Princeton in 1996 after 17 years at Bell Laboratories and is currently chair of chemistry.

Effective Sept. 1: in dining services, short-order cook Everton Chisholm, after 37 years; in public safety, security supervisor Vincent James, after 21 years.

Effective Oct. 1: in development research, research analyst Judith Adler, after 13 years; in the library, secretary Joann Blackman, after 16 years; in academic services, @Princeton coordinator Douglas Blair, after 11 years; in the plasma physics lab, administrator assistant Mary Ann Brown, after 28 years; in psychology, senior research scholar Roger Cholewiak, after 30 years; in the plasma physics lab, programmer information technician Mary Corneliussen, after 26 years; in building services, janitor Mary Evans, after 10 years; in molecular biology, senior technical staff member Martha Marlow, after 20 years; in the treasurer’s office, director of tax accounting Henry Murphy, after 13 years; in molecular biology, senior technical staff member Donald Peoples, after 43 years; in telecommunications, assistant business manager Mary Peoples, after 11 years.

Effective Nov. 1: in the library, shipping and receiving assistant Mohammad Amirzafari, after 19 years; in purchasing, assistant buyer Carmella Cruser, after 37 years; in housing, office support staff member Louise Miller, after 17 years; in molecular biology, research scholar Edith Postel, after 31 years.
