Name: Glenn Atkinson. Position: Master instrument maker in the physics department. Creating instruments for the experiments conducted by the department's professors. Building the hardware for a satellite that was launched by NASA in 2001 as part of a project led by David Wilkinson, who was the Cyrus Fogg Brackett Professor of Physics Emeritus. Quote: "I like the varied type of work I do here. We build a lot of interesting stuff. Some of the instruments we've made have been installed in a mountain in Italy and at the South Pole. Two Princeton faculty members were among 76 new members and 11 foreign associates elected to the National Academy of Engineering Feb. 13. Athanassios Panagiotopoulos, professor of chemical engineering, was elected in recognition of his "invention of the Gibbs ensemble method of molecular simulation of phase equilibrium and the development of computational techniques for studying complex fluids." Daniel Tsui, the Arthur Legrand Doty Professor of Electrical Engineering, was recognized for "contributions to the understanding of quantum physics of two-dimensional electron systems at semiconductor interfaces." Election to the National Academy of Engineering is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. Academy membership honors those who have made "important contributions to engineering theory and practice, including significant contributions to the literature of engineering theory and practice," and those who have demonstrated accomplishment in "the pioneering of new fields of engineering, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education." |
