Awards

The National Academy of Sciences gave its Award in Mathematics to Professor of Mathematics and Applied and Computational Mathematics Ingrid Daubechies for "fundamental discoveries on wavelets and wavelet expansions and for her role in making wavelet methods a practical basic tool." It also gave a Troland Research Award to Assistant Professor of Psychology Elizabeth Gould for "discoveries about neurogenesis in adult mammals and its modulation by hormones, neuro-transmitters and experience."


Trustees promote, reappoint assistant professors

At its January 29 meeting, the board of trustees acted on promotions and appointments of assistant professors.

Promotion

In English, Joanna Magali Picciotto has been promoted to assistant professor for a term of three and a half years beginning February 1. She studies 17th-century literature and the relation between literature and science in the period. An instructor at Princeton since 1998, she holds a 1990 BA from Columbia University and a 1999 PhD from the University of California, Berkeley.

Reappointments

The following assistant professors were reappointed for three years, beginning July 1:

In Art and Archaeology, Anne Bouché; in Chemical Engineering, Lynn Russell; in Classics, Andrew Feldherr and John Ma; in Computer Science, Adam Finkelstein; in Economics, Paul Willen; in English, Mark Hansen; in Geosciences, Thomas Duffy; in Molecular Biology, Joseph Tsien; in Philosophy, Delia Graff; in Politics, Patrick Deneen and Keith Whittington; in Religion, Leora Batnitzky; and in Romance Languages and Literature, Yolanda Miguel.

The following assistant professors were reappointed for one year, starting July 1:

In Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Hope Hollocher; in English, Oliver Arnold; in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Mary Wornat; in Physics, Vipul Periwal and Eric Prebys; in Psychology, Gordon Moskowitz; and in Romance Languages and Literature, Ricardo Krauel.

Senior lecturer

In East Asian Studies, Fumiko Nazikian was reappointed for three years effective July 1.

Faculty resignations

The following faculty members have submitted their resignations.

Effective January 1: Associate Professor of Anthrolopogy Vincanne Adams to accept a position at the University of California, San Francisco.

Effective February 1: Assistant Professor of Physics Mark Chen to go to Queen's University, Canada and the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research.

Effective July 1: Professor of Electrical Engineering and Princeton Materials Institute Mordechay Segev to go to the Technion, Israel.

Effective September 1: Paul M. Wythes '55 Professor of Engineering and Finance Halil Soner to accept a position at Koc University, Turkey.
