Chinese ceramics

These altar ornaments in the form of the Eight Buddhist Emblems are part of the exhibit "From Ritual Simplicity to Imperial Splendor: Chinese Ceramics From the Collection of Nelson Chang, Class of 1974" on display at the Art Museum through September 26.

Brentano to be in residence

The Brentano String Quartet has been appointed quartet in residence, beginning with the academic year 1999-2000. The three-year appointment, made possible by a gift from an alumnus, marks the first residency by a musical ensemble at Princeton.
"The presence of the Brentano Quartet on our campus will greatly enrich the University community," said President Shapiro. "Not only will faculty and students in our Music Department have the opportunity to work closely with this superb group of musicians, but music-lovers throughout the community will have the privilege of hearing them perform on a regular basis."

Leonine odyssey

This gilded lion is one of pair designed by Auguste Bartholdi, sculptor of the Statue of Liberty, and donated to the University by the Class of 1879 at its graduation. Since July the lions have graced the steps leading to the 1927/Clapp arch in the residential college named for Woodrow Wilson, the Class of 1879's most famous member.
Originally, they flanked the main entrance of Nassau Hall. As orange and black became established as Princeton colors, the tiger became increasingly identified with the University, and in 1911 the Class of 1879 replaced the lions with the bronze beasts by A.P. Proctor that still gaze out across the Front Campus. At that time, the lions were moved to the steps of 1879 Hall, where they remained for approximately 60 years until, somewhat the worse for wear, they were put into storage.
Thanks to the efforts of Hugh Wynne '39 of the Alumni Council's Committee on Princetoniana, they were discovered in the basement of Palmer Hall, refurbished with the cooperation of the Office of Physical Planning and the expertise of conservator John Scott, and returned to public view. Library requests all reserve orders

Reserve requests for the fall semester are due in the Reserve Department of Firestone Library by August 1, to ensure that they will be filled by the start of classes. Faculty are reminded that book orders require additional processing time -- often two months -- and should be turned in as soon as possible.
New requests can be submitted using the online reserve request service (http://infoshare1.princeton.edu/reserves/reserve.html) or the pink request forms. For more information call 258-3224.
