The Cotsen Children’s Library

Princeton NJ — The Cotsen Children’s Library is an international research collection of illustrated children’s books, manuscripts, original artwork, prints and educational toys from the 15th century to the present day, housed at Princeton’s Firestone Library. It also offers free public programs to enhance children’s enjoyment and understanding of books and literature.

In recent months Cotsen has expanded its offerings to increase the number of youngsters who benefit from the library.

• “Cotsen in the Classroom” brings the experience of the Cotsen library to local students at their school. Three “trunk programs” — on children’s author Beatrix Potter, colonial history and private investigators — use interactive learning to introduce students to the Cotsen collection. Since last October, 934 elementary school students have participated in “Cotsen in the Classroom” programs. Participating schools include Cambridge Elementary in Kendall Park, Noor-Ul-Iman in Monmouth Junction, Eldridge Park in Lawrenceville and Community Park in Princeton.

• Fifty children donned their pajamas to participate in the “Cotsen Pajama Party” on Jan. 13. Storyteller Jim Rohe engaged the youngsters by demonstrating the dramatic potential of the spoken word.

• More than 100 children and adults designed Valentine’s Day cards that were donated to the Princeton UNICEF Club as a fundraiser at the Jan. 27 Cotsen’s “Give UNICEF a Hand (and a Heart) Valentine Workshop.”

• On Saturday, March 31, Dillon Gym will be transformed for Cotsen’s “Princyclopedia 2007,” which will feature hands-on projects and dynamic demonstrations about the “Harry Potter” book series. The event, aimed at children ages 4 through 14, will include 30 presentations. There will be live owls, a snake and bug show and presentations on how to make spells and potions. The first 222 children who come in wizard costumes will get a special prize. The program is free and open to the public. For more information, call 258-2697 or visit www.princeton.edu/princyclopedia.
