The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation has selected seven Princeton scientists to receive its annual research fellowships. The fellowships are among 116 the foundation awarded to young university faculty members in the fields of chemistry, computational and evolutionary molecular biology, computer science, economics, mathematics, neuroscience and physics. Each scientist will receive $40,000 of largely unrestricted research support to be used over a period of two years. This year's Sloan recipients at Princeton are: James Olsen, assistant professor of physics; Szymon Rusinkiewicz, assistant professor of computer science; Robert Seiringer, assistant professor of physics (designated by Sloan as an award recipient in the field of mathematics); Stanislav Shvartsman, assistant professor of chemical engineering (awarded in the field of molecular biology); Benjamin Sudakov, assistant professor of mathematics; Elie Tamer, assistant professor of economics; and David Walker, assistant professor of computer science.
Anson Rabinbach, professor of history, has received a Fulbright Senior Specialists grant in education at St. Petersburg State University's Smolny College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in Russia. The Fulbright Senior Specialists Program offers two- to six-week grants to leading U.S. academics and professionals to support curricular and faculty development and institutional planning at academic institutions in 140 countries around the world. Rabinbach, who directs the Program in European Cultural Studies, is a specialist in modern European history with an emphasis on intellectual and cultural history. He plans to travel to Russia in May and June to teach, to consult with colleagues and to participate in the creation of a history program at Smolny College. Created to complement the traditional Fulbright Scholar Program that began in 1946, the Senior Specialists Program aims to increase the number of faculty and professionals who have the opportunity to go abroad on a Fulbright. The Fulbright Scholar Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and managed by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars. |
