B Y T H E N U M B E R S Office of Research and Project AdministrationThe University Research Board and its administrative arm, the Office of Research and Project Administration, oversee the solicitation, acceptance and administration of research grants from government and other sources as well as the patenting and licensing of discoveries made in Princeton labs. According to the URB's annual report:
• In 2002-03, researchers on campus spent $138 million in sponsored research funds, an increase of $8 million from the previous year. That figure does not include expenditures at the Princeton Plasma Physics Lab, which spent $68.6 million in research funds, primarily from the Department of Energy. • The molecular biology department had the highest level of funding with $25.7 million in sponsored research expenditures. The physics department had $10.7 million in projects. At the School of Engineering and Applied Science, total expenditures for sponsored research were $40.6 million. • The National Institutes of Health was the greatest funder of research on the main campus during 2002-03, providing $33.6 million. The second largest funder was the National Science Foundation, which supported $28 million in research. • The Office of Technology Licensing received 82 invention disclosures from faculty and staff members and applied for 117 patents. The U.S. Patent Office issued 38 patents during 2002-03 for inventions made at Princeton. |
