1,200 expected to attend Alumni Day

Princeton NJ -- More than 1,200 alumni and parents of current undergraduates are expected on campus for a day of lectures, ceremonies and other events Saturday, Feb. 21.

A new exhibition at Princeton's Seeley G. Mudd Manuscript Library celebrates the history and spirit of Reunions. Through a photographic timeline and a selection of artifacts from the University archives, "Princeton Reunions and the P-rade: A Historical Retrospective" explores the history of these alumni gatherings from their beginnings in the 19th century to the present. Complementing the exhibit is the online "Reunions and the P-rade: A Photographic Timeline," which can be viewed at: <web page>. Included is this 1932 photograph of members of the class of 1927, who donned togas for a "Roman Holiday" theme at their fifth Reunion. The exhibition can be viewed in Mudd Library's Wiess Lounge through July 15 between 9 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and until 8 p.m. Wednesdays. The annual Alumni Day and Parents' Program, coordinated by the Alumni Council, will begin at 9 a.m. with an alumni education open house and end with a 6:30 p.m. dinner honoring the winner of the University's James Madison Medal this year.

Highlights will include:

• A lecture at 9:15 a.m. by President Emeritus Harold T. Shapiro, a 1964 alumnus of the Graduate School and this year's Madison Medalist. He will speak on "Toward a More General Purpose: Higher Education and Society -- Non Nobis Solum (Not for Ourselves Alone)" in Richardson Auditorium, Alexander Hall.

• A lecture at 10:30 a.m. by Joseph S. Nye Jr., dean of the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, on "Soft Power and the War on Terrorism" in Richardson Auditorium, Alexander Hall. The 1958 graduate is this year's recipient of the Woodrow Wilson Award.

• A 12:15 p.m. Alumni Association luncheon and awards ceremony in Jadwin Gymnasium.

• A 3 p.m. service of remembrance in the University Chapel to honor deceased Princetonians and University staff members.

• A 4:15 p.m. reading by Toni Morrison, the Robert Goheen Professor in the Humanities, from her newest novel, "Love." The reading by the 1993 Nobel Prize winner will take place in McCosh 50. Tickets are required and will be available to alumni and parents on a first-come, first-served basis in Jadwin Gymnasium at the Alumni Association luncheon from 11:15 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.

A variety of other presentations are planned on topics ranging from "D is for Digital and Why It Matters" and "Taking the Universe's Baby Picture" to "The Psychology of Risk" and "Oedipus on the Road: How Not to Escape Your Destiny." A number of programs are scheduled for families, including one on "Navigating the College Admissions Process" for students in grades 9 through 11.

While the Alumni Day and Parents' Program is not open to the general public, faculty, staff and students are invited to attend the lectures, panels and workshops.
