United Way campaign kicks off Nov. 5
Princeton NJ -- The University once again will join other employers to help people in the local communities through the United Way of Greater Mercer County's annual fund-raising campaign. This year, the campaign will take place from Nov. 5 through Dec. 5 on the main campus and on Thursday, Dec. 4, at the Princeton Plasma Physics Lab. Last year, the University and its faculty and staff donated more than $182,000 to provide essential health and human care services to people throughout the region. Organizers attributed the success of the campaign to a strong network of motivated volunteers and a community of faculty and staff who believe in giving to and supporting the local community. They hope that each academic department and administrative office will be actively involved in this year's effort to support local United Way services.
All donations will be distributed to United Way programs in Mercer County or employees' home communities or to other health and human services agencies that are designated by individual donors. United Way funding is based on three focus areas -- promoting health and well-being, responding to crisis, and strengthening individuals and families. This year's campus fund drive chair is Daniel Scheiner, director of benefits, compensation and HRIS for human resources; the faculty chair is David Dobkin, dean of the faculty and the Phillip Y. Goldman '86 Professor in Computer Science; and the campaign coordinator is Pamela Johnson, executive assistant in human resources. "Last year, I had the good fortune to chair Princeton's United Way campaign," Scheiner said. "I witnessed an incredible group of volunteers come together and create a great team to support this program. The faculty and staff from the University continued to show their strong support for the United Way campaign and continued the strong tradition of giving and a real commitment to supporting the United Way campaign. "The funds raised by our employees have helped numerous individuals and families and served to strengthen many communities in our local area," he continued. "This year, our goal is to increase participation on campus as well as to increase the funds raised and give more to those in need." The University will contribute 15 cents per dollar for all gifts made by payroll deduction. For all other types of donations, the University will contribute 10 cents per dollar. As an incentive to giving, the first 200 people who make a United Way donation will receive two free tickets to the Princeton-Harvard basketball game at Jadwin Gym on Feb. 7. At the end of the campaign, there will be a special drawing for an assortment of prizes for all who have made a donation to the United Way. United Way campaign volunteers will distribute pledge cards.
