LaPaugh to become master of Forbes

Professor of Computer Science Andrea LaPaugh

Professor of Computer Science Andrea LaPaugh will become master of Forbes College, effective July 1.

A member of the Princeton faculty since 1981, LaPaugh earned tenure in 1987 and was promoted to professor in 1995. Before coming to Princeton, she received a 1974 AB from Cornell University and 1980 a PhD from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and spent a year as visiting assistant professor of computer science at Brown University.

A specialist in computer-aided design of digital systems, LaPaugh has worked extensively in the development of algorithms for problems in digital design. A major area of her research has been the interactions between placement and detailed routing in VLSI circuit layout. Another focus of research has been the synthesis and verification of digital systems from high-level descriptions. Her recent teaching has included undergraduate courses on Computers and Computing and on Database Systems and graduate level courses on Digital Information Access and Information Access: Issues for the Web and Digital Libraries.

Currently associate chair of the Department of Computer Science, LaPaugh is a member of the Faculty Committee on Examinations and Standing, the Applications of Computing Program Committee and the Engineering Biology Program Committee. She has served as departmental representative in Computer Science and in many University roles, including member of the Faculty/Staff Sexual Harassment Panel and member of the ad hoc committee on women faculty in science and engineering.

A freshman adviser in the Engineering School for many years, she was a fellow at Forbes from 1983 to 1992 and served on the advisory board of the Forbes Computing Center from 1984 to 1986.

Her appointment as master was made by President Shapiro on the recommendation of Dean of the College Nancy Weiss Malkiel and Dean of Undergraduate Students Kathleen Deignan.
