Religion major Lily Cowles’ senior thesis began with a sign. During the summer after her sophomore year, Cowles was volunteering in the southern African nation of Mozambique. En route to and from the orphanage where she was working, she noticed a sign announcing Mazione church services, and her curiosity was piqued.

Tilghman describes additional steps to deal with impact of economic downturn

In an April 6 letter updating the University community on the impact of the economic downturn, President Tilghman outlined additional budgetary measures to be taken because of continued decline in the value of the financial markets. They include the elimination of raises for tenured faculty and staff with salaries exceeding $75,000 and a reduction in the 2011 fiscal year budget similar to the reduction already called for in the 2010 fiscal year budget for a two-year total of $170 million in savings.

Entries sought for ‘Art of Science’

Members of the University community are invited to offer submissions for the “Art of Science” competition, which this year focuses on “found art.” The deadline for submissions is Tuesday, April 21. “We are soliciting images made in the course of research that have not only a scientific quality but an aesthetic one as well,” said one of the competition organizers, Andrew Zwicker, the head of science education at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) and a lecturer in the Princeton Writing Program.

Students, families to arrive for Princeton Preview

More than 2,000 people are expected to visit campus this month for Princeton Preview, as newly admitted students arrive to sample the University’s academic, residential and social offerings. Princeton Preview was extended last year from one to two three-day sessions to accommodate greater numbers of students and family members after the University ended its binding early decision admission process.

Seminar on high-risk drinking draws 17 schools to campus

Students, faculty and staff from 17 other colleges and universities gathered at Princeton Thursday and Friday, April 2-3, to exchange information and share best practices on addressing high-risk drinking. The 130 participants were here at the invitation of Princeton’s Alcohol Coalition Committee (ACC) to attend a seminar titled “High-Risk Drinking: Catalyzing a Culture Change,” the first of its kind offered at the University.
