Moore, a graceful novelist, pushes students to be daring

When creative writing professor Susanna Moore begins a writing class, she usually starts with this assignment: Write about yourself. “Young writers reasonably say, ‘I don’t know what to write about,’ so writing about yourself is a very literal way to begin,” said Moore, who spent 20 years teaching at various institutions before coming to Princeton in 2007. “The point always is to be writing something — it leads to more writing.”

Olympic air-quality study tests lasers, political savvy

Most people traveled to the 2008 Beijing Olympics for the sporting events and pageantry. Anna Michel went for the smog. Michel traveled to China as part of an interdisciplinary team of researchers from Princeton and Rice universities to study changes in Beijing’s air quality during the Olympics, when the Chinese government dramatically cut vehicle and factory emissions.

Shoemaker, leading high-energy physicist, dies

Frank Shoemaker, a leader in the development of high-energy particle accelerators during a highly revelatory era for physics and a founding member of the experimental particle physics group at Princeton, has died at age 86. Shoemaker, a professor emeritus of physics, a mentor to generations of junior faculty and graduate students, and a dedicated teacher who designed many of the University’s freshman physics class demonstrations, died at Meadow Lakes in Hightstown, N.J., on Feb. 11.

Home study course explores issues of ‘Religion Today’

Members of the campus and local communities can learn more about various topics related to religion — including ethics, politics, business and law — in a home study course offered in April by the Alumni Association. The course, titled “Religion Today,” will be moderated by Alison Boden, dean of religious life and the chapel. It will include reading assignments, weekly lectures and an online discussion group. An introductory dinner and a discussion led by Boden on “Religion on Campus” are planned for 6 p.m. Thursday, April 2, in the Class of 1998 Private Dining Room in Whitman College.

Princeton opens new chapter on solar energy

A solar installation at the high-tech storage library on the Forrestal Campus is launching the University into a new area of energy sustainability. Princeton and Columbia universities and the New York Public Library are serving as “hosts” for a new solar system set up on the roof of the building that houses the Research Collections and Preservation Consortium (ReCAP). The facility stores books, journals and other materials from the three institutions.

Dining Services selected to receive Silver Plate award

Princeton’s Dining Services has been selected as the winner of a 2009 Silver Plate Award, which honors the most outstanding and innovative talents in foodservice operations. Bestowed annually by the International Foodservice Manufacturers Association, the award is presented in nine categories, and Dining Services was recognized in the category of colleges and universities. Dining Services oversees residential dining, retail dining, convenience stores and catering on campus. The department serves about 14,000 meals per day and has a staff of 300 full- and part-time employees, 55 managers and chefs, and 240 student employees.
