A new sightline at the theater: Dolan and Wolf bring fresh view of performance studies

As undergraduates, Jill Dolan and Stacy Wolf, who recently joined the faculty of the Lewis Center for the Arts, both loved theater. They performed in college productions and sang with a cappella groups. But what each of them ultimately wanted to do was turn the study of theater on its head. For Wolf, that meant writing a Ph.D. dissertation arguing that a play’s text “was the least of it,” she said. Wolf embarked on a study of the audience. She interviewed audience members to examine how a venue’s characteristics — the architecture, the location, whether it was a civic center or a women’s theater space — produced different experiences.

Pop culture, power and politics inspire Leheny’s teaching

In the span of 50 minutes, a lecture by East Asian studies professor David Leheny on Asian “soft power” begins with music from an album called “Punch the Monkey” and touches on two Korean pop sensations, an anime film, the Beijing Olympics opening ceremonies, two NBA stars, “American Idol,” rice cookers, amusement parks and the top 20 animated features in the United States in 2002.

Memorial service planned for Lorin Maurer

A memorial service for Lorin Maurer, a Princeton staff member who died when Continental Connection Flight 3407 crashed near Buffalo Feb. 12, is set for 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27, in the University Chapel. A reception will follow in Prospect House. Maurer, 30, was the athletics friends group manager in the Office of Development, serving as a liaison to the athletics friends groups and facilitating annual fundraising for them. She was traveling to Buffalo to attend a wedding.

Graham named University ombuds officer

Diedrick (D.A.) Graham, Princeton’s associate ombuds officer for the past year, has been promoted to ombuds officer. Graham, whose appointment was effective Feb. 16, will provide assistance to campus community members who have concerns, complaints or other issues regarding their work or studies. The ombuds office offers confidential consultations and can help develop solutions to problems through mediation, individual coaching, group facilitation or training, or referrals to other University services.

Art museum presents works of German artist Barlach

The Princeton University Art Museum is presenting a rare American exhibition of the works of German sculptor, printmaker and playwright Ernst Barlach (1870-1938) through Sunday, June 7. “Myth and Modernity: Ernst Barlach’s Images of ‘The Nibelungen’ and ‘Faust’” conveys the versatility and narrative power of Barlach’s work through several of his sculptures and woodcuts.
