The University will mark the beginning of the academic year with Opening Exercises at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, in the University Chapel.

The annual interfaith service will include an address by President Tilghman and the recognition of academic achievements of undergraduate students.

For the first time this year, freshmen will process into the chapel by the residential college they have joined.

Following the ceremony, members of the class of 2012 will participate in a “pre-rade” from the chapel through FitzRandolph Gate, giving them the opportunity to officially enter the campus to start their undergraduate experience and to be greeted by fellow Princetonians.

Opening Exercises will be simulcast in 101 McCormick Hall and McCosh 10. The service also will be archived for later viewing at www.princeton.edu/WebMedia/special/.

Classes begin on Thursday, Sept. 11.

Frist open house set

Students, faculty and staff are invited to attend the Frist Campus Center’s open house from noon to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, on the center’s 100 level.

The annual event is an opportunity for the University community to celebrate the start of a new academic year and also to learn about resources that are housed in Frist and services provided by other offices on campus.

Starting at noon, free Frist commemorative gifts will be available, and Dining Services will provide food and beverage samples from a variety of vendors while supplies last. The Bradford Hayes Jazz Trio will perform live.

Farmers’ market returns in fall

The Princeton campus farmers’ market at Firestone Plaza will return this fall for six weeks, open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays from Sept. 16 through Oct. 21.

Members of the University and local communities will have an opportunity to purchase fresh locally grown produce and other goods from area farmers and businesses that use sustainable practices. Items expected to be available include organic fruits and vegetables, grass-fed beef and lamb, free-range poultry and eggs, cheeses, breads, baked goods, ice cream and coffee.

The farmers’ market was launched last year and runs in the fall and spring. It is an initiative of Greening Princeton, a student organization devoted to improving environmental sustainability, and is staffed by volunteers from the group. It is cosponsored by the Department of Dining Services, the Office of Community and Regional Affairs, the Princeton Environmental Institute, the Office of Sustainability, the Department of Building Services, the Department of Grounds and Building Maintenance, the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Students, the Pace Center and the Undergraduate Student Government Projects Board.

For a list of participating vendors and for more information, visit the farmers’ market website at www.princeton.edu/greening/market.

Community and Staff Day offers activities for all ages
