The Cotsen Faculty Fellowship "provides
opportunities for faculty members
recognized as outstanding teachers of
undergraduates to develop and teach new
courses or make some other distinctive
contribution to the undergraduate teaching
program, primarily in the humanities and
social sciences."

Trustees review initiatives to address
alcohol abuse
Board issues statement
on nude olympics
At their January 23 meeting, the
trustees reviewed suggestions for
addressing alcohol abuse that they have
received from University departments,
committees and groups under the special
initiative announced last spring, and
identified a number that they believe hold
promise for further discussion and
development.

Survey analyzes student drinking
patterns
As at other colleges, five years show
little change despite efforts to curb
excessive alcohol use at Princeton
A recent survey on
alcohol use and abuse found that drinking
patterns at Princeton have changed little
over the past five years, in spite of
increased efforts by the University to
curb excessive drinking.

Findings from the Report on the 1998 Core
Survey
1. As in 1995, more
than half of all undergraduates use
alcohol before age 18; about one-fourth of
all undergraduates first use alcohol when
they reach college age (i.e., presumably
after they arrive at Princeton).

Fee increase for '99-00 is lowest in three
decades
At their January 23 meeting, the
trustees adopted an operating budget that
increases student fees for the 1999-2000
academic year by 3.5 percent, a drop from
last year's 3.7 percent increase, which
was the lowest percentage increase in more
than 30 years.

Bogle, Gomory to receive alumni
awards
The 1999
recipients of Princeton's top honors
for alumni are John Bogle '51, senior
chair of the board of the Vanguard Group,
and Sloan Foundation president Ralph
Gomory, who received his Princeton PhD in
1954. Both will receive their awards and
deliver addresses on Alumni Day, February
20.

Stein wins Wolf Prize
Elias Stein, Albert
Baldwin Dod Professor of Mathematics, is
one of two winners of the 1999 Wolf Prize
in mathematics. The prize recognized Stein
for his "fundamental contributions" to
developing methods for analyzing wave
energies, such as light and sound.

Morrison
"Envisioning Paradise: A Conference on
Toni Morrison's Art and Imagination,"
sponsored by the Program in African

Obituaries
Harold M.
Szenes, 56, died on January 5. Associate
director of housing, he joined the
University in 1981. Born in Budapest, he
came to the United States in 1947 and was
a resident of Binghamton, N.Y., before
coming to Princeton. He lived in the
Trenton area and was president of the
Hiltonia Civic Association.
He is survived by his wife
Gail; parents, Michael and Mignon; and
children, Larissa Steele, Kendra
Schlussel, Jordana Weil and Benjamin.

Sean Miles,
19, a member of the Class of '01, died in
a car accident near his home town of
Bozeman, Montana, on January 10.
A 1997 graduate of Bozeman
High School, Miles was a resident of
Butler College. An aspiring writer, he
participated in the college council and
intra- mural athletics, and he worked
part-time in Dining Services.
Surviving are his parents,
Michael and Joan; and two sisters,
Michelle and Shaleen.
