What is learning?
By Caroline Moseley

Philosopher, electrical engineer examine the question from different viewpoints -- in the same course

What is learning? This question, central to the enterprise of any university, is being examined in an innovative interdisciplinary course called Learning Theory and Epistemology, taught by Professor of Philosophy Gilbert Harman and Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering Sanjeev Kulkarni. This union of apparently disparate approaches to the study of learning theory makes perfect sense, say the instructors.

Lockheed CEO to join Engineering faculty
Norman Augustine, chair and CEO of Lockheed Martin Corp., will join the Princeton faculty in September as lecturer with rank of professor in the School of Engineering and Applied Science, after retiring as CEO of Lockheed Martin. He will have a special affiliation in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, the department from which he received his undergraduate BSE in 1957 and his MSE in 1959.

NSF funds summer research program for undergraduates
The National Science Foundation has awarded a team of professors in electrical engineering $600,000 to fund the Princeton Summer Institute, a 10-week program that will give 15 to 20 undergraduates from all over the country first-hand experience in research at the frontiers of electrical engineering. Students in the institute will work with members of the electrical engineering faculty and their research groups on advanced research topics, while also participating in several optional, interdisciplinary, handson short courses.

Weaver funds track and field stadium
A gift from investment banker William Weaver '34 will be used to construct a state-of-the-art stadium for outdoor track and field sports, as part of the new complex that will replace Palmer Stadium. This part of the complex will be named the William M. Weaver '34 Track and Field Stadium.
Weaver is a limited partner, emeritus, in the firm of Alex. Brown and Sons. He was a varsity runner and jumper at Princeton and has been a long-time supporter of the University's track program.
"Bill Weaver has gone the distance to give our students the kind of out-standing setting where they can run their fastest and jump their highest," said President Harold Shapiro. "This stadium will be a wonderful legacy for Princeton athletics."
