McCrudden to become senior adviser on financial planning

Princeton NJ — Vice President for Finance and Treasurer Christopher McCrudden, a member of the University administration since 1973 and a national leader on issues related to university finance, will take on a new role as senior adviser to President Tilghman on a range of strategic matters related to Princeton’s financial planning. His appointment will be effective upon the designation of a successor for his current position.

“Chris McCrudden has been a highly valued adviser on financial matters for three Princeton presidents and has served Princeton very effectively in a number of senior roles over the past 35 years,” Tilghman said. “As we now begin a five-year fundraising campaign and an ambitious 10-year capital plan, we need to find a successor to Chris as vice president for finance and treasurer who can serve throughout this entire period and beyond. I am delighted that Chris will help see us through this transition and then will remain in the cabinet in a new role that will significantly increase our capacity to address strategic financial issues at the most senior level.”

In his new role, McCrudden also will continue to oversee the Office of Real Estate Finance and the office that manages the University’s land holdings at Princeton Forrestal Center. His title will be vice president and senior adviser to the president.

McCrudden joined the University in 1973 as assistant controller for budget and long-range planning. In 1977 he was promoted to associate controller; in 1983 to director of the budget; and in 1988 to associate treasurer and director of finance. In 1998 his title was changed to associate provost for finance and associate treasurer, and in 2001 he was appointed treasurer, a position that was then designated the University’s senior financial officer. In 2005 he received the added title of vice president for finance.

As a national leader in the field of federal research costing issues, he served for seven years on the governing board of the Council on Governmental Relations, an organization in Washington, D.C., that deals with policies and technical issues involved in the administration of federally sponsored programs at universities. He served as chair of the council’s costing policies committee, its nominating committee and its board, and he frequently represented the council in meetings with high-level federal agencies and presidential advisers.

Long active in leadership positions at Trinity Church in Princeton and the Habitat for Humanity Princeton Project, he currently serves as vice president of the Investment Trust of the Episcopal Diocese of New Jersey and a vestry member of Trinity Church Wall Street.
