Book club, home study programs offered this fall

Princeton NJ — Members of the University community have the opportunity to participate in home study programs offered by the Alumni Association this fall.

“Tiger Tomes: Princeton’s Online Book Club” brings together alumni and other University community members for online discussions of Princeton-related books. The fall lineup includes:

October

• “Nineteen Minutes,” a novel by 1987 alumna Jodi Picoult.

November

• “The Making of Princeton University: From Woodrow Wilson to the Present” by James Axtell, the Kenan Professor of Humanities at the College of William and Mary.

In addition, two Alumni Studies courses are being offered this fall:

• L. Carl Brown, the Garrett Professor in Foreign Affairs Emeritus, will lead a course on “America’s Moment in the Middle East,” which runs through Oct. 31. While the course began Oct. 1, registration is still available.

The course, which will examine America’s involvement in the Middle East for the past 60 years, will include weekly lectures, reading assignments and an online discussion group. Four lectures will be held on campus beginning Oct. 9, but will be recorded and made available online for anyone who cannot attend.

• “War and Peace,” a course led by Caryl Emerson, chair of the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, will run Oct. 15 through Dec. 13.

The course will lead students through Leo Tolstoy’s famous novel and composer Sergei Prokofiev’s opera based on Tolstoy’s work. The course will include reading assignments and an online discussion group, and will culminate in a performance of the opera at Lincoln Center in New York on Dec. 13.
