Auditing program shares academic resources with area residents
Princeton NJ — Area residents are encouraged to take advantage of the broad academic resources available in their own backyard through the University’s Community Auditing Program (CAP).
The program, offered through Princeton’s Office of Community and Regional Affairs, allows individuals who register — on a non-credit basis — to attend lectures that are part of the regular course offerings for undergraduate students. Participants each year can choose from among some 200 course offerings, which are posted online and listed in a CAP catalog. Auditors receive course handouts and are invited to participate in special receptions and lectures.
Although most classes for the 2007 fall semester cannot accommodate additional auditors, anyone interested in taking a class should contact the CAP office to participate in one of the special lectures.
Those interested in auditing should note the following dates regarding the spring 2008 semester:
• Last week of December — CAP list of lectures available for auditing posted online at web.princeton.edu/sites/pucra/auditing.htm.
• Wednesday, Jan. 16 — Online registration for Princeton Borough and Township residents and all University-affiliated individuals. In-person online registration available to this group only from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Frist Campus Center Multipurpose Room (level B). Limit of two courses until the third day of registration.
• Thursday, Jan. 17 — Online registration for general public (no residency restrictions). In-person online registration available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Frist Campus Center Multipurpose Room (level B). Limit of two courses until the third day of registration.
• Friday, Jan. 18 — Online registration continues for all general public. In-person online registration for the general public from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the CAP office, 22 Chambers Street, Suite 101.
• Friday, Jan. 18, through Friday, Feb. 15 — Registration remains open — online, by mail or in the CAP office — through the first two weeks of classes for those courses with space available. After the first two days of special registration, it is possible to sign up by going directly to the CAP office.
• Monday, Feb. 4 — First day of spring 2008 classes.
The auditing fee per course is $120 to cover administrative costs and course materials. Special accommodations regarding the fee will be made in cases of financial hardship.
No certification is given upon completion of a Community Auditing Program course. However, New Jersey teachers who audit classes are granted special documentation/verification for the purposes of satisfying their professional development requirements.
The Community Auditing Program should not be confused with the Program in Continuing Education, which entitles an individual to all privileges given to a fully enrolled student at a cost of $4,125 per class. The Office of Community and Regional Affairs administers both programs for University and non-University constituents.
Courses taken through the program do not count toward a degree at Princeton University. Credit for courses taken through the program might be counted toward future degrees at other institutions, depending on the institution’s requirements and regulations. The Program in Continuing Education can be an invaluable resource for New Jersey teachers who need to enroll in classes for credit. Full-time K-12 New Jersey teachers may participate in the program at the substantial discount of $688 per course.
