The Bulletin is published weekly during the academic year, except during University breaks and exam weeks, by the Office of Communications. Second class postage paid at Princeton. Subscriptions. The Bulletin is distributed free to faculty, staff and students. Others may subscribe to the Bulletin for $30 for the 2005-06 academic year (half price for current Princeton parents and people over 65). Deadlines. In general, the copy deadline for each issue is the Friday 10 days in advance of the Monday cover date. The deadline for the Bulletin that covers May 22-June 4 is Friday, May 12. H. Vincent Poor, a Princeton alumnus and professor of electrical engineering known worldwide as a distinguished researcher, teacher and innovator, has been named dean of the University’s School of Engineering and Applied Science, effective June 1.

Cell action hinges on one-on-one communication

When a group of people tries to decide how to carry out an important task, it is sometimes said that the pivotal discussions do not happen in large, well-attended meetings, but in one-on-one conversations around the water cooler. It turns out that among individual neurons in our brains, the same may hold true. Curious about the way networks of nerve cells work together to transmit messages, a research group at Princeton has been exploring the communication style of retinal ganglion cells, the neurons that line the back walls of our eyes and transmit everything we know about the visual world from eye to brain.

Wristbands needed for Reunions

All alumni and University representatives once again will be required to have wristbands that identify them as participants in Reunions activities, which this year fall on June 1-4. The wristbands will allow them to enter Reunions sites and to obtain refreshments.

Course teaches ways to turn conflict into positive change

Conflict is a normal part of life that can be difficult and distressing, but ultimately can lead to positive changes if handled properly. That is the message Camilo Azcarate has been imparting to members of the campus community since becoming the University’s ombuds officer in August 2003. Azcarate has worked with several campus offices on conflict management training programs, which have been so well received that his office is now offering courses on the subject to all faculty, staff and students.

Fifth Anniversary Fristfest Weekend to include food, music, films and fun

Faculty, staff, students and University family members are invited to celebrate spring and the conclusion of the academic year at the Frist Campus Center’s Fifth Anniversary Fristfest Weekend Thursday through Saturday, May 4-6. This year’s celebration also marks the culmination of the Frist Campus Center’s yearlong fifth anniversary observance.

Library acquires archives of prominent literary magazine

The archives of The Hudson Review, one of the most distinguished and influential American literary magazines, will permanently reside in the Princeton University Library.
