Peter Lewis to give $101 million to advance the arts at Princeton

Peter B. Lewis, a 1955 graduate and trustee of Princeton, will contribute $101 million to support a major new initiative to enhance the role of the creative and performing arts in the life of the University and its community. The gift was announced by President Tilghman following Jan. 20 meetings of the Board of Trustees.

Klawe named president of Harvey Mudd, Tilghman appoints search committee

President Tilghman has appointed a nine-member committee to search for a new dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science. Maria Klawe, dean for the past three years, has been selected to become president of Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, Calif., effective July 1. Klawe came to Princeton in January 2003 as dean of engineering and professor of computer science after 15 years on the faculty and in senior administrative positions at the University of British Columbia. Prior to UBC, she spent eight years with IBM Research in California and two years at the University of Toronto.

University hosted visits by two political leaders

On Jan 17, Jon Corzine spoke in the University Chapel at a morning prayer service hours before he was inaugurated as New Jersey’s 54th governor. ... Like his predecessors, Corzine will serve as an ex officio trustee of Princeton. The University also hosted the inaugural ball that evening in Jadwin Gymnasium.
    On Jan. 18, U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton spoke in Richardson Auditorium as part of events commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. ...

Operating budget includes funding for key priorities

University trustees on Jan. 21 adopted a 2006-07 operating budget of more than $1 billion that includes special funding for key initiatives in several areas. The trustees acted on a budget proposal from President Tilghman, based on the recommendations of the Priorities Committee of the Council of the Princeton University Community. The committee, which is composed of faculty, students and staff and chaired by Provost Christopher Eisgruber, has served as the mechanism for recommending fiscal and programmatic priorities for more than three decades.

Pilgrimage takes anthropologist on journey of self-discovery

As the departure date neared, Abdellah Hammoudi became increasingly aware that his study of the hajj — the pilgrimage of Muslims to Mecca — was also going to confront him with many questions about himself. A professor of anthropology, Hammoudi was preparing to study the rituals of the hajj from the closest possible viewpoint — as one of the approximately 2 million Muslims who annually travel to Mecca during a set time period in the Islamic calendar.
