Princeton NJ -- One of the most recognizable landmarks on the Princeton campus, the FitzRandolph Gate, has been restored in time for its 100th birthday in 2005.

The ornate entrance to Princeton’s campus from Nassau Street was reinstalled in December. The gates, side panels, transoms and ornamental work, including the shield and light fixtures, were taken down in July for the restoration project.

Original parts of the gate, which had been missing, were reconstructed, while the gate’s hinges and bearings were replaced or restored to new condition. Altogether, more than 230 pieces of cast metal were replaced. All new and restored parts, constructed from authentic wrought iron from England, were hand forged using traditional blacksmithing methods and tools.

The gate was a gift from Augustus van Wickle of Hazleton, Pa., in memory of his ancestor, Nathaniel FitzRandolph, who gave the land on which Nassau Hall was built.
