The University presented honorary degrees to eight individuals who have made significant contributions in the sciences, arts and humanities (from left): playwright and director Emily Mann, Oxford University Vice Chancellor Colin Lucas, professor and historian Bernard Lewis, actress and television host Oprah Winfrey, radio host Terry Gross, acclaimed minister James A. Forbes Jr., President Tilghman, scientist and physician Anthony Fauci and baseball legend Cal Ripken Jr.

 

 

(above, left) Salutatorian Josephine Dru (left) and valedictorian Lillian Pierce each gave addresses during the commencement ceremony. Pierce encouraged her classmates to continue to engage in "informed silliness." Dru addressed her classmates and their guests in Latin.

(above, right) Vanessa Wills '02 celebrated after walking through the FitzRandolph Gate for the first time following the ceremony.

(below) James Baker '52, who gave Class Day remarks, was awarded an honorary membership in the class of 2002. With him is Wade Rakes, Class Day co-chair.

President Tilghman (left) and Trustee Meg Whitman '77 prepared for the baccalaureate service in the Faculty Room of Nassau Hall. Whitman, president and chief executive officer of eBay Inc., encouraged the graduates to "always love what you do," but also to approach careers and all aspects of life with integrity, respect and total effort.
