Pomp, circumstance - and a little levity
Princeton NJ -- The University awarded degrees to 1,084
undergraduates and 648 graduate students in commencement
exercises June 5.
Princeton also conferred honorary degrees upon seven
other distinguished leaders in the sciences, arts,
humanities and public service. In addition, faculty members,
graduate students and four New Jersey secondary school
teachers were honored for excellence in teaching.
The University conferred honorary degrees upon eight
individuals who have made important contributions in the
sciences, arts, humanities and public service and touched
the lives of millions of people.
Pictured
with President-elect Tilghman (third from right) are the
recipients (from left): U.S. District Judge Sonia Sotomayor,
a 1976 Princeton graduate; basketball legend Bill Russell;
ecologist Jane Lubchenco; attorney Kevin Gover, a 1978
Princeton graduate who is former director of the U.S. Bureau
of Indian Affairs; award-winning filmmaker, actor and writer
Spike Lee; President Shapiro, who was honored with a
surprise honorary doctorate for his 14 years of service to
the University; Aaron Lemonick, who holds a Ph.D. from
Princeton and served the University for many years as a
physics faculty member, dean of the Graduate School and dean
of the faculty; and Courtland Perkins, a 33-year faculty
member who was chair of the Department of Aerospace and
Mechanical Sciences.

The class of 2001 welcomed four honorary members at Class
Day ceremonies June 4. In addition to President Shapiro and
President-elect Tilghman, they were: comedian Bill Cosby
(right), who spoke at the ceremony; and retired New York
State Supreme Court Justice Bruce Wright (left), who was
admitted to Princeton in 1935 but was told he would not be
welcome when he arrived and it was discovered that he was
African-American. He never attended.
The
University honored four outstanding New Jersey secondary
school teachers during commencement June 5. Pictured with
President Shapiro (left) and President-elect Tilghman
(right) are: Hilary Peterlin of Kinnelon High School,
Kinnelon; Frank Heffernan of Chatham High School, Chatham;
Staci Horne of Phillipsburg High School, Phillipsburg; and
Andrew Dunn of Northern Highlands Regional High School,
Allendale. The four were selected by a University committee
from statewide nominations.
