McCrudden promoted; office reorganized

Princeton NJ -- Christopher McCrudden, a Princeton administrator since 1973, has been promoted to treasurer of the University.

His appointment was approved in January by the Board of Trustees. He replaces Raymond Clark, who retired from the position and was elected treasurer, emeritus (see related story).

"Chris McCrudden has served the University for many years with great distinction," said President Shapiro. "I am confident that his skills will continue to bring many dividends to the University community as he assumes this new position."

"Smart, fair-minded and effective, Chris has been terrific in his role as associate provost for finance," added Provost Jeremiah Ostriker. "We are all confident that he will be outstanding as the University treasurer, a worthy successor to Ray Clark."

McCrudden also has announced a reorganization in the treasurer's office. "Ray has left a legacy of talented staff and up-to-date and powerful transactional computer systems," he said. "Our challenge is to align these in a way that will most effectively deal concurrently with both increasing change and increasing expectations."

The associate provost for finance and associate treasurer since 1998, McCrudden initially joined the University as assistant controller for budget and long-range planning. In 1977, he was promoted to associate controller. He became director of the budget in 1983 and was named associate treasurer and director of finance in 1988.

In addition to carrying out his responsibilities in the treasurer's office, McCrudden has chaired a number of multi-office committees. He led a group that implemented an integrated human resources/payroll system as well as the Administrative Process Team, which focuses on administrative improvements at the University.

McCrudden has been active in federal research costing issues, participating in numerous studies conducted by the Council on Governmental Relations. Currently, he chairs the governing board of the council, which deals with policies and technical issues involved in the administration of federally sponsored programs at universities.

His volunteer activities include holding lay leadership positions at Trinity Church in Princeton and serving on the Habitat for Humanity Princeton Project Steering Committee. He currently is vice president of the Investment Trust of the Episcopal Diocese of New Jersey.


McCrudden said the overall objectives of the reorganization are to improve coordination within the office, to broaden access to senior treasurer's office staff and to ensure maximum flexibility for the future. "Most of the changes were effective in February, although some will occur more gradually over the course of the spring," he said.

The reorganization involves changes in both individual assignments and responsibilities and in structure.

Four staff members have been promoted and given significant increases in responsibilities. They are:

• Laurel Harvey to associate treasurer and director of risk management. In addition to her continuing responsibilities, she will co-lead, with Dale Grieb in chemical engineering, the Administrative Process Team.

• Steven Gill to budget director. He will assume responsibility for overseeing the sponsored project accounting section headed by John Floersch in finance and will meet with the University Research Board as a resource on technical issues.

• Matt Kent to assistant treasurer and director of capital financing. In addition to continuing to oversee both payroll and accounts payable operations, he will develop financing plans for the capital, renovation, major maintenance and equipment programs. He will meet with the Facilities Planning Group and will coordinate necessary funding actions. He will be supported in this effort by Sharon Nash, who previously assisted and reported to McCrudden, and her staff in the gift and special accounts section.

• Maria Bizzarri to bursar. She will oversee the University receivables system and will retain her responsibilities for student accounts.

In addition, titles for three staff members have been changed to better reflect their responsibilities. They are:

• John Yuncza to associate treasurer for operations.

• Johnnie Jones to director of operations support.

• Craig Richmond to director of University financial systems.
