Donald S. Lopez is the Carl W. Belser Professor of Buddhist and Tibetan Studies and the chairman of the department of Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Michigan.

Lopez has written several books about Buddhism and Tibet, including Prisoners of Shangri-La: Tibetan Buddhism and the West; Elaborations on Emptiness: Uses of the Heart Sutra; and Curators of the Buddha: The Study of Buddhism Under Colonialism. He also has translated into English various works by the Dalai Lama, including Awakening the Mind, Lightening the Heart; The Way to Freedom; and Opening the Eye of New Awareness.
