"Educated Guesses" Symposium Offers Forecast for 21st Century

Princeton, N.J. -- A forecast for the twenty-first century--in society, science, technology, the arts, and other areas -- will be the focus of a symposium scheduled for Saturday, May 27 on the Princeton University campus. "Educated Guesses: Cross-Disciplinary Predictions for the Next Century" will be moderated by Princeton University President Harold T. Shapiro and will feature five distinguished Princeton graduate alumni speakers representing diverse disciplines.

The participants are at the forefront of academic and non-academic enterprises likely to play important roles in shaping the direction for the next century. The speakers are: Dr. Margaret J. Geller, a Harvard University astrophysicist who maps the large-scale structures of the universe; Dr. Rebecca Goldstein, an analytic philosopher and novelist whose works include The Mind-Body Problem and the forthcoming Properties of Light; Dr. Robert E. Kahn, who helped found the U.S. government's original Internet program and who continues to lead research and development on the National Information Infrastructure; Dr. Andrei N. Lupas, a widely-published molecular biologist who is investigating genomic approaches to creating new types of antibiotics; and Dr. Harrison C. White, a Columbia University sociologist who is an authority on topics ranging from organizational mobility to the interlinking of careers and creativity.

The moderator, President Shapiro, has published books on econometrics and higher education and is now chairman of President Clinton's National Bioethics Advisory Commission. He is a past president of the University of Michigan.

The speakers will discuss expected developments in their own fields and how those developments may affect other disciplines. The symposium will include, in addition to individual presentations, a panel discussion among the participants and an opportunity for the audience to pose questions to both the moderator and the speakers.

"Educated Guesses" is sponsored by the Association of Princeton Graduate Alumni as part of a year-long celebration of the Graduate School's Centennial. The symposium will be held in Alexander Hall (Richardson Auditorium) from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 27. It is free and open to the public.
